Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women Quarterly Meeting

The quarterly meeting of the Sacred Heart CCW was held on November 8th, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the Sacred Heart Rectory. Seven members were in attendance.

The meeting was called to order with an opening prayer entitled “Thoughts from St. Teresa of Calcutta”. The secretary’s report was read and Judy Anderson made a motion and Rhonda Damm seconded the motion to approve the minutes. There was no correspondence. The secretary’s report reported a total expense of $3412.10 with an income of $250 from a funeral. The current balance on hand was $4102.00 Collette Leopold made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report and Mackenzie Erickson seconded the motion, motion passed. An outstanding bill was discussed regarding the WACCW dues that will be due in the future. The bill has not yet been received. The NCCW dues of $100 are due now. Carmen Rasche made a motion and Judy Anderson seconded the motion to pay these bills, motion passed. The CCW received a request to donate to the Seminarian Burse as well as a request to donate to the Annual Appeal. A motion was made to make a donation for $1000 for the Catholic Ministries Appeal and $500 for the Seminarian Burse by Mackenzie Erickson and seconded by Marsha Edwards, motion passed.

Organizational Reports

  • Leadership: Judy Anderson reported on how to sign up for e-news from Connecting Catholic Women. She also discussed the importance of involving more women in your local chapter of CCW.
  • Church Concerns: October is the month of the Holy Rosary

    • Unfinished Business

  • There are additional copies of the Parish Directory at the back of the church. Thank you to all who participated in CCW Sunday. $1180 was raised during the baby bottle campaign. The public square rosary was held near Pat Bonnell’s store, no report was given. Two members attended the WACCW meeting. A report was given on the WCCW Fall convention. Discussion was held regarding the 51st Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service on November 20th at 2pm at Sacred Heart. St. Catherine’s guild will provide lunch. All of the area churches will rotate years with assisting with decorating and serving lunch.

    • New Business

  • Father Ahrens plans on doing Adoration on Saturday afternoons during Advent. He expresses his gratitude for all the CCW does for the parish. Judy Stenzel is working on the Angel Tree program and will make an announcement during mass. Discussion was held regarding Fun Sunday. It will be held on February 26th 2017. The theme was discussed with the ideas of spring. The committee meeting will be held on December 7th, 2016 at 6pm to discuss the guild jobs and theme. The Lakeview Assisted Living Christmas Party will be held on December 14th at 2:30 pm. The World Day of Prayer will be held on the first Friday of March and Sacred Heart will host. Discussion was held to survey parishioners during Fun Sunday to assess what the church would like to do in the future.

    • The next WACCW meeting will be a newsletter so members will not need to travel. Discussion was held regarding purchasing a pew card for the prayers during mass. Collette Leopold made a motion to adjourn and Carmen Rasche seconded the motion, motion passed. The closing prayer was read of Our Lady of Good Counsel. The next CCW meeting will be held on February 14th, 2017 at 7:00 PM.

    Sacred Heart CCW meeting
    Tuesday, August 9, 2016

    The quarterly CCW meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. with an opening prayer, “Mary’s Yes.” The secretary’s report was read and a motion was made by Judy Anderson and seconded by Joanne Waldron to approve the report. Motion passed.

    Carmen gave the treasurer’s report stating a balance of $7264.10 as of June 30, 2016. The following bills were presented: Hy-Vee $10.98 and Fareway $10.97 for ice cream bars and napkins; Hy-Vee $87.56 for WACCW refreshments; Expressway $378.70 for ice cream bars; WDCCW dues $450 (150 ladies x $3) Motion was made by Joanne, seconded by Rhonda Damm to pay these bills. Motion passed.

    Discussion was held on contributing to any of the WDCCW entities and the decision was made to make our contribution to the Sacred Heart Foundation instead. Motion was made by Barb Hussong and seconded by Elaine Stenzel to donate $2000 to the Sacred Heart Foundation. Motion passed.

    Sara Bartosh, DRE, asked if SHCCW would be willing to donate funds to purchase a flat screen tv/blue ray player to be housed at the rectory for use by the Confirmation program. A motion was made by Elaine Stenzel and seconded by Carmen Rasche to provide the funds for this purchase. Motion passed.

    Commission Reports

  • Leadership-Organizational Services: JoAnne Waldron volunteered to replace Leanne Salentiny for this post. Collette presented this month’s report, emphasizing that we should be praying for our priest and provided a prayer to use. And that we should be promoting our CCW with pictures and getting the word out as well as praying for our church and CCW.
  • Service-Community/Family Concerns: Eva Rostomily reported about the tragedy of people having such hate for one another. Jesus died for us all, no matter the color of our skin. Certain sins are deadly to the sinner. We all need to make choices that lift one another up every day. Eva took part in the Jackson County Relay for Life. $30,960 was turned in at the end of the night.
  • Service-International Concerns: Elaine talked about the “Million Works of Mercy”, the need for more diapers and making them with ties rather than Velcro, using a casing and ties rather than elastic on the pillowcase dressed, making the list of items for Haiti Missions available at the back of church, the truck for Mary Jo Copland is about full, but need pickup and driver, a list of items for birthing kits, and how to make plastic bag mats. Elaine is collecting items to take to the fall WDCCW meeting at Fairmont in October.
  • Spirituality-Legislative Concerns: Celia reported that there has been a decrease in abortions. The numbers are as low as in 1973. A report is out that states birth control drugs are not totally absorbed by women’s bodies. Evidence of them being excreted and eventually ending up in water supplies, causing feminization and infertility. 80% of water samples are contaminated with drugs. Supreme Court members are changing. Changes may affect law to protect women and children. Snapchat—young women are lured into sharing nude and semi-nude pictures thinking they’ll be destroyed in 10 seconds. Not the case. A new app called Kik promotes that message will disappear after it is read, but it really doesn’t. Parents, guardians, etc. need to be very vigilant about monitoring their children’s smart phone/internet use.
  • Spirituality-Church Concerns: Barb shared with us info on Saints Mary Magdalene and Maria Goretti.

    • Unfinished Business

  • Church cleaning—13 women participated and only scrubbing of the kitchen floor and sweeping of the storage areas were not completed.
  • Baccalaureate—Only 2 kids took part. 32 plates and 3 pans of bars were used.
  • Summer ice cream is going well.
  • Confirmation Mass will be Sunday, October 16th, 10:30 a.m. at Sherburn
  • Year of Mercy Mass will be held at Sacred Heart, HL Sunday, October 16th, at 2 p.m. St. Bernadette’s guild will be in charge of serving light refreshments after Mass. Father suggested bars/cookies, punch coffee. Plan for 150.

    • New Business

  • Mass changes in October: Brewster 5 p.m. Saturday; Heron Lake 8:30 a.m. Sunday; Windom 10 a.m. Sunday.
  • Annual Parish Directory—any changes need to be reported to Collette by September 15th. St. Claire’s Guild—ladies need to ask to be put in this guild, we do not assign them to it.
  • CCW Sunday will be celebrated October 2nd with women doing the liturgy roles and serving coffee and rolls.
  • WDCCW Fall workshop, October 8, Fairmont—CCW will pay registration fee of anyone willing to go. See Collette for registration form.
  • SHCCW members can sign up on the diocesan website to receive “Connecting Catholic Women” on line.
  • Individual membership to NCCW applications are available if anyone is interested.
  • Ecumenical Thanksgiving planning meeting will be held September 22nd, 7 p.m. at the Methodist Church. All are invited to help plan this service. Some changes will be discussed: having it at Sacred Heart each year, having it on Sunday rather than Wednesday evening, as well as the actual planning of the event. Sacred Heart will be in charge of the lunch this year.
  • Bonnie Henkels requested that we look at the Angel Tree Program Registration form and make any recommendations on how it could be improved. All present felt that it was adequate as is, but made the recommendation that exchange receipts be included to facilitate returns if size wasn’t right, etc. Also discussed wrapped vs. unwrapped and felt it was more in the spirit of Christmas if the gifts were wrapped and a surprise to the recipient.

    • Other new business

  • Elaine was wondering if the wall behind St. Joseph could be covered until it is repaired. It is a disturbing eyesore as is. We will need to approach parish council and Mary Mathias about this. Elaine is also totally out of quilting material. CCW agreed to help with purchase of material on an as needed basis.

  • Tuesday, November 8th—SHCCW meeting, lunch by St. Ann’s
  • Officer/Guild Chair changes need to be in to Collette by September 15th or they will remain the same as 2015-2016.

    Sacred Heart CCW meeting
    Tuesday, May 10th, 2016

    The quarterly CCW meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm with an opening devotion entitled “Grace.” The secretary’s report was read and a motion was made by Barb Hussong to accept the minutes and Elaine Stenzel seconded the motion. The motion passed and the minutes were approved. The treasurer’s report was read with a balance of $1070.22 with a report of $6617.61 of income with a current balance of $7718.25. Maurita Volk had a bill for $35.84 for May Baskets. There was an outstanding bill for postage of $127.40, Styrofoam plates for $78.09, electric knife purchase of $29.99, a bill for $309.71 to Hy Vee for coffee and rolls, $21.87 to Eva Rostomily for the Lakeview Birthday Party, and $31 for the Tri County News for fun day advertising and Elaine Stenzel had a bill of $237.96 for quilting supplies. A motion was made by Colette Leopold and seconded by Judy Anderson to pay these bills. The motion passed unanimously.

    Twenty May Baskets were delivered to shut ins by Maurita Volk. A thank you was received on behalf of the IHM seminary for the donation that was made to the Seminarian Burse. Ten bags of mulch were used for the landscaping project. Barb Hussong reimbursed the CCW for the unused bags.

  • Church Concerns: The 12 promises of the Sacred Heart were read
  • International Concerns: We are asked to collect card fronts and cancelled stamps. 250 Quilts were tied and 100 diapers were made to donate to the missions. There are requests to collect items to Haiti. There was a list provided of needed materials to donate.
  • Legislative Concerns: The area meeting discussed the concerns with sex trafficking in Minnesota.

    • Unfinished Business:

  • 120 ditty bags were sent to Mary Jo Copeland’s and 115 quilts were sent out from our parish. A summary was given on the World Day of Prayer which was held at the Lutheran Church. Eucharistic Adoration was completed this year on Saturdays for one hour during Lent. It was discussed what day and time was the best for Eucharistic Adoration. The Area CCW News discussed the Million Works of Mercy. They are trying to get one million works of mercy recorded from April 3rd to November 20th. You are asked to record all of your works of mercy and submit it to mercynccw@gmail.com or bring your list to the November CCW meeting.

    • New Business:

  • Marsha Edwards volunteered to organize ice cream for Saturday evening mass. St. Anne’s guild is in charge for the reception for Baccalaureate. Church cleaning will be held the week of June 13-17th. The Jubilee of Mercy Day in Worthington will be held on June 8th. The Province Meeting at Monticello will be held on June 13-14th. The Winona Diocese CCW meeting will be held in Windom on July 13th, 2016. The Worthington Area CCW meeting will be on July 26th in Heron Lake at 7pm. The next Sacred Heart CCW meeting will be held on August 9th with lunch served by St. Catherine’s Guild.
  • Confirmation will be held on Sunday, October 16th at 10:30 am in Sherburn. The Year of Mercy Mass will be held on Sunday, October 16th at 2pm at Sacred Heart in Heron Lake. Discussion was held to have bars and coffee following the Year of Mercy Mass.

    • The closing prayer was held and the meeting was adjourned.

    Secretary’s Report

    The November meeting of the Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women was called to order at 7:00 PM with an opening meditation entitled “Did Jesus ever laugh?”

    The meeting was called to order. The secretary’s report was read and approved by the President. The treasurer’s report was read with expenses totaling $2,276.95 and $600 income. The balance on hand was $5833.13 with an anticipated bill of approximately $525 for ice cream, paper goods and CCW dues. The President approved the treasurer’s report.

    A bill was presented to pay the Worthington Area CCW dues of $38.50 are due (.25 x 154 members). Judy Anderson made a motion to pay the bill and Eva Rostomily seconded, motion passed. A bill was presented to pay the National CCW dues of $100. Elaine Stenzel made a motion and Celia Henkels seconded to pay the bill, the motion passed.

    Discussion was held regarding donations to various organizations. A request was read from Bishop Quinn to donate to the Seminarian Burse. Discussion was held regarding the $6,000 deficit from the annual appeal as well as the Sacred Heart Foundation. A spreadsheet was presented that reviewed the donations from the CCW from the past 7 years. Discussion was held and Judy Anderson Made a motion to donate $2000 to the Sacred Heart Foundation and $500 to the Seminarian Burse. Cleo Miranowski seconded the motion, motion passed.

  • Eva Rostomily-Community Concerns: Am I My Brother’s Keeper?-Syrian Refugees to European countries versus immigration to the United States
  • Elaine Stenzel-International Concerns: A thank you for donation provided at the state convention.
  • Kathi Haberman-Family Concerns: No mailings this quarter.
  • Celia Henkels-Legislative Concerns: Freedom of religion versus Obama Care.
  • Judy Anderson-Church Concerns: Box of Joy-a handout to children of poor countries and Eucharistic Adoration with children to teach children how to speak to Jesus

    • Unfinished Business:

  • Parish directory-additional copies are in the back of the church
  • CCW Sunday-Thank you for all who helped out
  • The baby bottle campaign raised $1065.00
  • There was no public square rosary this year.
  • Confirmation: 3 sheet cakes were ordered, 2 were used. Punch, mints, nuts and coffee were served to 200 people.
  • WACCW report: 7 members of the Sacred Heart CCW attended with the largest group at the convention.
  • Church tour: 50 people from the traveling church tour visited sacred Heart.
  • The 50th anniversary of the Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service will be held on 11-25-15.

    • New Business:

  • Discussion was held regarding Eucharistic Adoration during Advent. Discussion is occurring with Father Arens.
  • The Angel tree program will distribute gift tags on 11-23-15 and all gifts will be collected by 12-13-15.
  • It was presented that trash bags and mailing labels were needed, Kathi Haberman made a motion and Vicki Hussong seconded to purchase these items, motion passed.
  • Family fun day will be January 31st with a snow date of February 7th. Guild chairs will meet on December 2nd at 6:30 in the church basement to discuss the theme and plan.
  • St. Anne’s guild will host the Lakeview Christmas party.
  • The World Day of Prayer will be on Friday, March 1st 2016.
  • The WACCW meeting will be on 1-23-16 at St. Luke’s in Sherburn.
  • A new coffee pot is needed for the church basement. Mackenzie Erickson made a motion and Cleo Miranowski seconded to purchase a new pot, motion passed.
  • Collette Diemer discussed having the refreshments provided at the CCW meetings rotate between members. The list will go in alphabetical order.
  • Cleo Miranowski presented on having an organ concert by Father Arens with a soup and pie supper. The concert will be held on 12-6-15

    • The meeting was adjourned with the next meeting scheduled for February 9th, 2016 at 7pm.
