The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
In green pastures he gives me repose; he refreshes my soul.
Even though I walk through the valley of death, no evil will I fear; for you are at my side with your rod and staff that give me courage.

FUNERAL: Eternal rest grant unto Gary Schons, whose funeral Mass was Tuesday, May 2nd, at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel in Waterloo, Iowa. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. We remember his loved ones in prayer.

My friends,

It looks like spring is finally here and some beautiful days are ahead. This season brings many beautiful celebrations in our faith as well.

We have recently celebrated First Holy Communion in Windom and in Heron Lake. We congratulate our young people who have received the most precious Body and Blood of Jesus for the first time. First Communion is always a great celebration and the faith of the young people is encouraging to all. May they all grow to be good followers of Jesus, especially now that they have His presence in their hearts.

We will also celebrate Baccalaureate in the parishes over the next few weeks. We congratulate our graduates and wish them well in their next step in life’s journey. We have many bright and talented young people in our parishes, many of whom have served as Mass Servers and Readers over the years. We pray that Jesus will continue to bless them and guide them well to find their calling in life.

I continue to be grateful for your prayers for my recovery. A week ago on Thursday I had my six-week follow-up appointment. I still have quite a bit of swelling and some scar tissue build up, but things are progressing. I have been noticing a slight reduction in pain, which is something I have been hoping for and the goal of my last surgery. Again, thank you for your prayers, they are working!

Next weekend, Fr. Pick will be back to celebrate the Masses. Back in September, long before I knew I was going to have surgery, I planned a trip for the middle of May. Given my current condition, it’s not going to be so much of an adventure, but I have a non-refundable ticket I have to use. Right now, a little break to get off my foot is going to be very helpful for my recovery. I’ll be back for Masses the weekend following. Thank you for your kind welcome to Fr. Pick. He is always looking for things to do in retirement and really enjoys filling in for Masses and celebrating with our communities.

In case of emergency or funeral needs while I am away, please feel free to contact the parish in St. James (375-3542) or the parish in Jackson (847- 2719).

Spring brings many good things and hopefully, more beautiful weather. Thanks be to God for the gifts of grace that come with this season.

In Christ, Fr. Arens
